Promoting the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program

11/02/2018

We’ve been working on a project related to the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) for over a year now. The project is part of Texas’s efforts to combat the opioid epidemic, and we’re specifically focused on promoting use of the Texas PMP as a tool for prescribers to make appropriate prescribing decisions.

We have a great team for this project that includes members from the Center for Health Communication (CHC), Moody College of Communication, Dell Medical School, Steve Hicks School of Social Work, College of Pharmacy, and School of Nursing. It has involved research ranging from an environmental scan of how other states are promoting this kind of tool to formative research with prescribers to understand potential barriers to use of the Texas PMP. I’ve already summarized our progress and some of the unexpected benefits of this work in an earlier post.

We’re ready for the next exciting step in this project, which will be rolling out materials we developed to promote use of the Texas PMP to prescribers across the state. You can see a banner ad at the top of the Texas PMP page that is a first step in that direction.

The CHC is dedicated to evidence-based health communication, and our most exciting projects are the ones where we can see how our work would contribute to the health of people across Texas and beyond. Our work on the Texas PMP has been a great example of that, and we’re excited for the implementation of what we’ve designed and doing what we can to help address a public health crisis.
